For fans of the original Deus Ex, Deus Ex: Invisible War was a big letdown. Although the game in itself was good, there was no way it would hold up to the richness that Deus Ex brought to the PC in 2000. So, how would Deus Ex: Human Revolution hold up the vast amount of hype surrounding its four-year creation?First, to answer to one of the only real complaints I've heard from gamers: lack of multiplayer functionality. One must realize that the Deus Ex series was never intended to be a multiplayer series. One of my biggest complaints about games that are created more so for multiplayer than solo is that so much work is put into the multiplayer features that the solo aspect of the game becomes mediocre, if not pathetic. In my opinion, this has plagued many games, from the Halo series to most of the Call of Duty games. People don't buy these to play the one-player scenario tract; people buy these games so they can get online and challenge other people that own the game. If the solo aspect of the game was altogether eliminated and the multiplayer option was all that was left, people wouldn't care. Games that are RPG-based, such as Deus Ex, Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, etc., are designed to be a single-player game. They pour everything into the story, the music, character development, and gameplay. That is why I applaud the creators of Deus Ex Human Revolution for not creating a multipleyer option. It would run counter to previous titles in the series, plus I honestly don't see how turning Deus Ex into a simple deathmatch would make the game better. If I want a simple deathmatch game, I'll play Call of Duty over Xbox Live. Now, back to the game itself. I feel the game has held up to the hype. While not the most graphically beautiful game in the world, the game does a great job of creating a cyberpunk atmosphere that perfectly suites the game. As another review said, the game almost feels like being in the world from Blade Runner. The music has enough comparisons to the previous Deus Ex games, while keeping itself unique. The voice acting is well-done. Normally during games with voice-acting, I would read the words on the bottom and skip ahead if I got done before they stopped talking. With Human Revolution, I listen to the conversation and ignore the subtitles completely. Facial movements and tones of voice do a great job of portraying the speakers state of mind.I love the gameplay. The limited inventory size was carried over from the previous game, although you can now increase the size through augmentation. This causes you to have to be selective on what weapons you take, which you discard, and what additional items you carry. Granted, the limited ammo found in the game might upset others that are used to having unlimited or almost-unlimited ammo capacity, I think this causes you to be careful on ammo usage, be as precise as possible on firing, and causing you to be more stealthy and use take-downs on enemies, rather than simply unloading a clip into them. While I don't expect the replay value to be high, Deus Ex Human Revolution is a game that I would want to play through again. There are many things that will be missed the first time through. I've never grown tired of playing through the original Deus Ex, even though I've beaten it over a dozen times. I would strongly recommend Deus Ex Human Revolution to anyone that looks for a good story within a game. You'll find yourself immersed into their world and you'll lose track of time very quickly. If you're one that spends most of your time playing multiplayer games, I wouldn't recommend this. Odds are you might lose interest in the story rather quickly, plus the lack of ammo will drive you insane when compared to games like Halo where you have almost unlimited ammo to work with. Top game of the year candidate. Read more ›

If you aren't familiar with the series, think Metal Gear meets Mass Effect. This is a very tactical stealth based shooter with a complex story. Some people will nominate this as a Game of the Year Contender, while the run and gun crowd may be turned off by the deliberate pacing of the game.Concept: 9/10Set in a dark and not so distant future, where human beings are getting cybernetic implants, you play as Adam Jensen, an Ex-SWAT operative with a mysterious past, and you're on a corporate backed espionage mission to uncover a vile plot to alter the course of humanity. Armed with the latest in Cybernetic Stealth Technology and an arsenal of weapons, you travel the world to expose corporate and government corruption.Story: 10/10!!!This is one of the best stories that I've ever seen in a game! Without spoiling anything it is about the boundaries between freedom and anarchy, and the limits that should or should not be placed on technology. The story is complex, so you will have to pay close attention. The story is told through cutscenes, cinematics, in game dialogue, and if you hack computers in the game, there's even more information backing the story. It is truly immersive and will make you think. Your actions will determine which ending you get, so it is crucial that you pay attention.Gameplay: 8/10As you play through the game, you earn PRAXIS POINTS, which you use to upgrade your character. There are loads of upgrades to choose from and they will all affect the style of your gameplay. Some upgrades enhance your stealth, like silent movement, more info on enemies' behavior, or temporary invisibility. Some enhance your strength, like the ability to wield heavy weapons with no recoil or bursting through walls like the old Cool-Aid guy. Other implants enhance your shooting, your vision, your radar, your armor, resistance to special damage attacks, close range combat, and hacking. The game is basically 4 HUBS with a few load screens breaking them up. There are main quests (which drive the story) and side quests (which supply additional info to the story and allow you to gain extra XP.) When you Accept a Quest, important info shows up on your HUD. The majority of quests deal with you infiltrating areas protected by armed guards. This is where the game shines. It is up to you how you complete the quests. You can sneak past enemies and use a tranquilizer rifle to knock them out. You can use a heavy machine gun to mow them down. You can use sniper weapons and hack computer systems to turn off security systems or even turn them on your enemies. When you get to the end, there is usually a multiple choice conversation you have with your contact that will affect the story and give you an XP bonus. The save points are generous and you usually have the ability to load the last 2 auto-saves or any of your (up to 20) manual save points.Weapons: 9/10There is an excellent selection of modifiable weapons in the game. Tranq Gun, Combat Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Plasma Gun, Laser Gun, Shotgun, Pistol, Revolver, Rocket Launcher, AOE Stun Gun, Normal Stun Gun, Mines, Grenades, etc... The weapon choices really allow you to customize the game to your style of play. Put landmines by a door, then trigger the alarm to blow up your enemies. Bribe an NPC and then hit him with a stun gun to get your money back. You can pretty much do anything that you can imagine with this arsenal at your disposal.Haxx0rZing!!1: 8/10If you choose the route of Hacker, there is a FUN mini-game that you play in realtime, where you try to take over terminals on a network and reach your goal. The terminals are connected by paths and there is a starting point and an ending point with multiple paths. Each terminal has a % chance that you will be discovered. If you are not discovered, you can move from terminal to terminal and hack the computer, gain XP, information, and sometimes access to the enemy's security systems. If you are discovered, a counter appears and you have that much time to get to the end goal. You also have countermeasures at your disposal to show down the Network. (Nuke allows you to access 1 terminal without fear of detection, Worm gives pauses the countdown for 5 seconds if you are discovered, and Fortify slows down the enemy Network when they reach terminals.) If you are discovered, the system is locked down for 30 seconds and enemies usually are set on alert.Bosses: 6/10The low point of the game are the Boss Battles. In a game where you specialize your character for infiltration, the worst situation you can find yourself in is a small arena against a super soldier that can insta-kill you. Fortunately, there are only a few of these. When you play, keep this in mind, and bulk up your armor. I died on the first boss 4 times, even though I sniped him in his helmet-less head 3 times and blew up an exploding barrel next to him. I eventually beat the first boss by hiding. He threw a trio of grenades, and they all bounced off walls, back at him. The boss fights would have been much better if the boss chased you through an area where you had to be stealthy. Then you could use your infiltration skills in the fight. All of the Boss fights are arena battles. Grenades, Armor, Heavy Weapons, the Typhoon, and health powerups will all aid you.Graphics: 8/10The world is dark and... shiny. It's not the best looking game, but it delivers on atmosphere. The futuristic visions of New Detroit, China, and Montreal are interesting. The characters are well animated and the enemies are nicely defined so you can tell the difference between a light armored, medium armored, and heavily armored guy. (Except for the helmetless first boss who shrugs off head shots with a high powered sniper rifle... sigh)Sound: 7/10The music is very cool and the sound effects highten the suspense and punctuate the action. There isn't anything that you'd download from itunes though. I also have to knock the game for using slang from 1995. "I heard someone jettin'", "Fly Girl", and "I gotsta get back to my crib, cholo." *Cringe*Replay Value: 8/10There is no multiplayer, but you can replay the single player campaign using different tactics. Play through once as a stealthy hacker. Try again as an armored terminator who can burst through walls. There are also 2 achievements that you can try: Complete the game without killing anyone (gas grenades, stun guns, KO moves...) and Complete the game without setting off any alarms.Maturity: Older TeensThe plot is complex and there is violence and swearing. This is more of a political intrigue story, so the "I just wanna kill bad guys" crowd might be a little overwhelmed.Overall: 9/10This is a Great Tactical Shooter that will take you 15-30 hours to finish. It's a full on RPG with excellent user friendly stealth / combat elements. The story is outstanding, especially if you have been keeping up with what is going on with our current government.Buy it if you love the Deus Ex series.Buy it if you love Stealth Action RPG's.Buy it if you love Stealth Games or Tactical Shooters like Metal Gear of the Tom Clancy Games.Buy it if you love a good government conspiracy story.Rent it if you can finish an RPG fast.Avoid it if you wanna feel like Rambo and gun down hordes of bad guys. You won't last very long if you abandon the tactics. It's like playing Halo with No Shield. Read more ›

The original Deus Ex(DX) hit the market back in 2000 and with its combination of a Cyberpunk atmosphere and fusion of RPG and FPS elements, became a hit title that eventually won game of the year amongst many other awards. The game was ahead of its time in a way, similar to how Blade Runner (the movie) was ahead of its time for back in the 1980's. With this new release, DX: HR, does the game fall into mediocrity or does DX continue to be a a beautiful melody of various gameplays in an immerse environment?.... A few technical details aside, I would say this game easily marks a new generation in the Deus Ex line and could just be one of the best SP based campaign game released in 2011.GAMEPLAYAnd a whole lot of it! This game is massive and the cyberpunk vision of the future is captured beautifully. DX:HR I feel, tends to be a blend of FPS meets Stealth meets Espionage meets Social. You play as Adam Jensen who is a security officer for an Augmentation company. After an attack leaves him so badly wounded he needs heavy body augmentation the game begins. Who plotted the attack? Why? Terrorism? Self-Sabotage? The conspiracy runs deep and it is your job to figure out it! At your disposal is a very immerse and game changing set of mechanics that shapes how you play the game, yet adapts to your play-style. Need to get to the 5th floor and hack a terminal.. no problem go in guns blazing...or maybe stealth past the guards taking them out one at a time... or maybe break in through a vent system...or combine all 3! Not only can you approach objectives and quests from various methods, but there often are quite a few options available to you. You don't always need to take that grate on the left. You could hack the janitor's closet and steal the keycard and just walk right in on the objective. Maybe there is a guard wandering who has a keycard also, or someone wrote it in an email message that you found when hacking terminals. The variety is just huge and never gets old! To top it all off you can upgrade Mr. Jensen to better suit your play-styleAs you complete objectives, side quests, or basically do anything you gain XP. Shoot a mob you get XP, stealth him instead XP, Avoid combat all together get XP! Hacking amounts to bonus XP as hacking is more of a mini-game than a mandatory tool in this game, but I found it worth my time to hack. It was fun and provided some interesting bits of information that paid off in the long run. Anyhow, the XP you gain is used to level up Jensen, and as you level you gain the ability to further boost the level of mods you have. What is so beautiful about this the upgrades compliment your play-style. You are not forced to pick upgrades you do not want, however I rarely found that I picked something that felt like a waste. It is a solid system that gives you the freedom to play as you want for the most part.GRAPHICSDeus Ex: Human Revolution is not the flashiest of games. It isn't the latest and greatest game engine that might choke your PS3/360 or stress your video card until it explodes. The game still looks very good though. It captures a cyberpunk / blade runner style atmosphere very well and uses a darker color pallet which makes for a slightly darker vision of the future. Character animations can seem a little stiff or awkward at times, but do remember people are walking around with augmentations so the body movements might seem a bit unnatural for a reason. On the PS3 version the Frame-rate dropped from time to time, especially during one or two intense cut-scenes but it wasn't that bad. There was similar frame-rate issues on the 360 but occurring in different areas spots so the drop is probably relating to how the system is handling the engine itself. Graphically, the PS3 vs the 360 have differences but not enough to sway me to one or the other. It really depends on what you are looking at, at the time you are comparing. Sometimes PS3 looked better, sometimes 360. PS3 lighting was better in some spots, yet the 360 had better coloring in others. In short... The Graphics, while not the best, are very good and despite the PS3 and 360 having some frame-rate issues, either system is a perfect option for this game; each boasting pros and cons over the other.SOUND/STORYThe music for this game is awesome! The style of music chosen fits the environment and setting of the game perfectly, going well with the cyberpunk theme. It helps immerse you into the game which is a big plus. Voice acting however is a sub-par as often the same voice actor played multiple characters and didn't even change their voice. You may even find multiple characters who say the same line of text. I'm not surprised by this though as the original Deus Ex had some of the Worst-yet best! voice acting of any game I played. .... Storyline wise, while I honestly have not completed the game at this point (the game is LONG!), the storyline is great! Everything you do has influences on the game, and the storyline is very deep and balanced. It is full of plot twists and surprises that had me hooked.REPLAY/LENGTHWhile this game lacks multiplayer, you are getting your $'s worth here. The game easily has 25+hrs of gameplay, more like 30-40 hrs if you factor in side quests and taking your time to really immerse yourself. Not only does this game boast a huge amount of varied gameplay, but I could easily see myself picking it up and doing it all over again! The variety in gameplay is just that amazing. You stealthed your way into the building for Mission 6, replay it and try going Rambo. You might find new items or bits of information, or even slightly influence events of that mission. Deus Ex reminds me a little of Mass Effect in this sense. Every new gameplay can be filled with little bits and pieces you may of missed, or simply did not see in a previous playthrough; plus there are multiple endings to this game which only tempt you to try alternative paths and methods.CONSNormally I integrate my Con's into each section, but Deus-Ex is the kind of game that you need to see the entire picture. The game can clock it easily +25hrs and has such a wide variety of elements to it things were bound to go wrong in some spots. This comes in the form of frame-rate problems(see graphics), boss encounters, and AI problems. Frame-rate has been covered but Boss Encounters were a disappointment simply because there is only one real way to fight them. RAMBO style! If you specialized in hacking that won't help you during the fight. The illusion of choice is removed here and you are forced into a play style you might not enjoy. This isn't a major problem but for someone who didn't specialize in guns, since the game is forgiving, it feels like bosses were rushed in rather than fully thought out. AI problems well, it was to be expected. Sometimes enemies just become stupid and forget you are there or have such obvious pathing it makes you wonder how they were even hired to be guards. Despite their AI problems however they seem to have eagle eye vision when it comes to accuracy with guns (which makes for a good challenge!)OVERALL ... 93% (9.3 / A)Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a product of its sums. Individually each part of the game, from the shooter, to the stealth to the social aspects 'could have' been done better. Instead each element was created specifically to balance the other and what you end up with is a game that has multiple play-styles, gameplay which caters to the needs of the player, immerse storyline and environment, and a wide variety of methods to tackle the problem; so much so alternative play-throughs are a must! DX: HR has technical issues, but when a single game can easily surpass 25-30hrs and contain such variety, a few problems might slip through the cracks or be inevitable. In the end, we have a beautiful game that will keep you glued to your PC, 360 or PS3. Marauder Shields
Pretty boring honestly. The game itself isnt that fun to play, it's ok but it's weak. The races are short for the most part and the driving is ok a camera stays focused on your car through turns which is cool but NO WAY this game is worth $60. BreakdownGraphics-9.5 awesome graphics but unfortunately this is the best part of the gameReplayability-4 there are challenges to unlock cars an other things but nothing majorPhysics (mechanics)- 2 it doesn't feel like you are driving the car, even when you choose the view to race from within the car there isn't even a steering wheel or nothing just looking at the road, this isn't the early 2000sLength- 1...maybe 5 hours tops?? Really?Enjoyment- 1 honestly it's pretty boring, it didn't make me want to play this game at allI love NFS, mostly the older ones but I did enjoy hot pursuit but this game just doesn't appealDo yourself a favor, RENT before you buy. Trust me you will understand why after you rent itOverall the game is just overall weak minus the beautiful graphics but thats it. If you are looking for a new game for xbox pick up Skyrim, Saints row 3, Battlefield 3, Mw3, Gears of War 3, Batman Arkham City, Sonic Generations even Forza 4, but not The Run. I'm not hating on this game it just doesn't being much too the table races too short an the little bit of excitement you'll have playing this game quickly vanishes.Hope this helps

This game is good, but there are a lot of people I know will be disappointed with it. All the races seem the same, just on a different stretch of track. Personally, I don't mind because I can sit and play a game for hours, not caring whether I do good or bad, or what's even going on in the game. The graphics are very nice, and they used the "Frostbite 2" engine, for those who don't know, which was used for Battlefield 3. The actual story behind the game isn't bad as well.Overall, the game will keep you busy for at least one play through the game, and if you're interested, for some races online as well.EDIT: It feels like it's sort of moving away from what NFS used to be. As far as I've played the game, I haven't come across any "lap" type of races, it's all get from point A to point B in an expensive sports car. I miss the street/drag racing kind of thing.EDIT #2: I'm finding myself to rage quiting while playing this game quite a bit. It seems like there's always a car in the same lane that I can't see just over that hill. It seems like the obstacles in this game are too easy to predict. Once again, I miss the old street/drag racing type of style. This feels a lot more like a simulator than an arcade racer. [Edit: it seems they have have patched it since I originally posted the review. I don't run into those cars nearly as much anymore]

After being extremely impressed with Hot Pursuit, I picked up this game thinking it would be a step up from that. Not true.Don't get me wrong, this is a great game. The graphics are fairly good and overall it's a fun game, but compared to previous NFS games, it's nothing to brag about. Ironically, the aspect of this game that's the most boring and tedious is the running part. At certain points in the game, the police will surround your car and you will be forced to run on foot. In order to jump fences and avoid getting caught, you have to hit certain buttons on the controller. Mess up, and you have to try it again. These feel more like cut-scenes with a little audience participation than any type of challenge. I can understand that the hope was to give the game a little variety so it's not strictly a racing game, but if that was their intent, they should have allowed the player to control where they run and where to hide. Also, NFS is known for having the police in the game. Sadly, the cops are only a small part of this game and many races won't even include them. This may not bother you, but if you're buying a game in the NFS series, chances are, you'll be missing that. The game does have a lot going for it. Visually the game looks good and the selection of cars is nice and grows as the game progresses. The storyline is a nice element in a racing game, but it's referenced so infrequently that you'll often forget about it. Plus, you goal in each leg of the race is usually to just progress a few spots, so you'll wonder why you needed the story at all.Overall, the game is still a lot of fun and I have a feeling that most of the negative reviews are from those who just expected more from the NFS series and were a little let down. But used for a few bucks, it might be worth it.

This game is amazing. It has the feel of a great action movie. Before I bought this game, I was kind of skeptical because of some the mediocre reviews it had received. I decided to get it anyway and I am so happy I did. I think it is a must have for anybody who is a fan of arcade racing games.

EA is here again to bring another amazing Need for Speed game, or that's what they try to do here. Need for Speed: The Run at first glance seems to bring NFS fans what they've wanted for a while, which is going back to the roots with awesome action-racing and an awesome storyline. And with it being developed by Black Box(Developers of Most Wanted) and using the all new frostbite 2 engine, makes it even more exiting. This game though, fails to do so in many ways and in the end just feels like a pretty mediocre racing game. This is not saying that this game is bad, it's just that the game could have been way more than it is.Story: The story is pretty bland. The idea is interesting, but the execution is off. So you have to race from California to New York. That's it. All the awesome conflicts that you think the driver would go through throughout the game are just not there. You think you would get a story like Fast and Furious, but you don't.Story 4/10Gameplay: The handling of the cars is more or less like the new nfs: Hot Pursuit. But way more bugged. Sometimes you dont even have to break when going 100mph at a u-turn. You just automatically drift through it. The AI aren't anything special and the awesome destruction events promised by the frostbite 2 engine just don't seem that exhilarating.Gameplay 6/10Graphics: The graphics of this game don't compete at all with other racing games like Forza 4. And with games like battlefield 3 using the frostbite 2 engine and having great graphics, you'd probably expect the same from this game.Graphics 7/10Sound: The sounds are okay. They sound like how they're supposed to sound.Sound 7/10Overall it's a 5/10. It's okay for a rent, but if your looking to buy something that will blow you away. Just RUN.

To be fair I'm going to split this review into two parts. Single Player and Multi Player. Since they both run on different engines, its only fair to separate the two as far as quality and game-play goes.*Single Player*Game Play:I always play my games on the hardest difficulty because I want to be challenged and get my $49-59 worth. Single player on hard is so easy, I think even the most novice player could beat it with no sweat. I beat the game in what was literally a solid 2.5-3 hours and died about 5 times. I'm no FPS guru, but for comparison it took me about 10-15 hours to beat MW2 and Reach on their hardest difficulty. I'm not a Halo or MW2 fanboy and I hate to make the comparison, but those two games on their highest difficulty have made me seriously consider throwing my XBox out the window (some of you know what I'm talking about). That's the level of difficulty I expect from any "big name" FPS. 3 hours of game play is just insulting. It partially has to do with the A.I. The only time you'll have trouble is when you don't see and enemy. Other than that, the controls are great and familiar. MOH does have this feature called "Look/Lean" where you can poke your head out from behind a corner or object and lay down some suppression fire. Its interesting, but I don't see many people using that feature.Story:This game doesn't have a story line, it has a story circle. You start the game with no clear intention of your overall objective. All you know is that you're deep in Afghanistan looking for "bad guys" and you're there to exterminate them all and that is the cycle of pretty much 95% of the game. Now I know it's based off a real war at real places and real events and the terrorist are the bad guys and the idea is to win, which is fine. But the overall idea of this game is just kill bad guys and keep killing them till there aren't any left. That's not a story, that's a theme. This game lacks a clear beginning, middle and end.Graphics:It looks real, like any other war game. The daylight scenes are very detailed with the tree lines and mountain ranges. I don't care to hear idiotic opinions about "the characters hand looked fuzzy for 2 seconds during a cut scene". That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I'll put it like this. When you shoot people, blood spews from their exit wounds. When a bullet hits someone in the head, pieces of their skull and brain matter spray the wall behind them. I think that's graphic enough.Sound:Amazing. That is one of the few things this game really has going for it. The soundtrack is pretty good to. The music from the end still gives me goosebumps.Comments:This game is seriously not done. The amount of glitches and A.I. foolishness is clearly noticeable at many times during the game. You'll see enemies "gumby" their way across the opposing battlefield as you desperately try to shoot them to no avail. The only other big flaw is the automation. The game works on the premise that you have to be in a particular spot to advance your teammates to the next part of the mission. It can get rather annoying running around the map looking for that particular "pressure point"*Multi Player*Game Play:Online play is fun and exciting. There is definitely a noticeable difference in the game-play from multi to single player. It is a bit slow to get going because of the limited load-outs and weapon selections that you have when you first start playing. I suppose that after you start leveling up and gaining more options this would be alleviated. I personally feel that the game plays to slow during the matches, however it has its merits. Aside from the aforementioned "glitchyness", the multi-player is definitely a fresh alternative to the existing lineup.Overall:This game was probably the most disappointing FPS title that I've purchased. I don't say that to be cruel, but this game feels like it was really rushed and they could have spent more time developing it. It will have its time to shine, however it really can't stack up to its competition. I know people like to tout the notion that why does everything have to be compared with COD. Well its a FPS war game. It is only logical that you make a comparison of the two because not everyone has $60 to spend on every new game that comes out. I realize that some people have to seriously consider between the two choices. So I have to say, for the sake of clarity that this game is not as good as MW2 which was released a considerable amount of time before it.*SYNOPSIS*This game is not without its merits. It has many flaws, but most you can overlook. Medal of Honor does a good job of delivering a fresh multi-player layout and generally good online game play. However it has many crucial flaws that just don't give it enough merit to stay in full rotation against its existing competition and I suspect its soon to be competition.3/5 - Buy this game used after a few weeks or rent it. If you're strapped for cash, I'd pass on this one. Or find a friend like me who buys all the big new titles and borrow it from him/her when they inevitably dish it for the next big title.. As a memeber of the Army serving currently in Afghanistan I do not see what the fuss is all about. I am not offended by this game at all. It is a game. It is entertaining and I play it when I have time here in Afghanistan. I wish the Taliban did fight back like they do on the game. We could ball these jokers up in the time it took to finish the game. lol Sadly enough all they do is emplace IEDs. As far as the game play is concerned it is tight and responsive. It helps that the controls are like Call of Duty. I like this game more than Call of Duty Black Ops but it is not as good as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 or 2. Just my opinion. I wish you could play versus split screen but that is not an option. Sucks... But, overall it is a great game. And it is not offensive to the Armed Forces. Stop putting words in my mouth while you sit on your butts back home doing nothing. I am fighting for freedom. The freedom to play what the hell I want to play...

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series is such a blockbuster that every FPS inevitably gets compared to it. That seems to be why this game is getting rather mediocre reviews; if you're looking for a MW2 look-alike, this ain't it. But I don't think it was meant to be either. The whole advertising campaign revolved around its uber-realism as it is loosely based on US SOF activities in Afghanistan immediately following 9/11. Everything from the lingo to the settings and gameplay aspire to give you the closest possible experience of being a "Tier One" operator (the top dawgs of the SOF community). On this front I think they did a decent job.Single player: As I previously mentioned, the single player campaign is based on the initial invasion of Afghanistan in the weeks following 9/11. You play in various alternating roles including a Navy SEAL, a Ranger, and an Apache pilot. The campaign is pretty fun because it's a good combination of traditional FPS and newer roles like calling in Air Support, .50 cal long-range sniper, Apache pilot, etc... It is very realistic (to the point where you might not understand what they're saying if you're not familiar with Military-speak, e.g. 5 mikes instead of 5 minutes or RTB instead of return to base). As far as glitches I didn't really notice many. I did have one where my ATV got stuck in between two trees and that required a reset but it seemed like a freak accident and I wasn't too annoyed. I thought the graphics were pretty good, but I'm pretty forgiving of things like frame rate, graphics etc for what it's worth. As far as difficulty I don't think it was too easy. They have a Tier One mode that is unlocked for each level after it is completed. Everyone who said it was too easy probably didn't play on it. Although I do wish the campaign was a bit longer I don't think it was atrociously short; but you can easily finish it in a weekend.Multiplayer: There are a few types of games: team deathmatch, team objective, sector control, and you get to choose between 3 classes of soldiers, each with their own weapons: Rifleman, Special Ops, Sniper. You level up each class separately by playing in that class. The points system is a basic 10 points for each kill plus bonus points for particular achievements (head shots, tier 1 kills, double kills, etc...) The gameplay is a little different than you'd expect based on the single player. For example the button layout is different and a lot of functionality from the single-player mode is disabled, such as the slide to cover or going prone. Yes you read that right: you can't go prone in multiplayer. But it's a good thing because otherwise snipers would be unstoppable as there is no kill cam. This game emphasizes shooting skill as the explosives (grenades, rockets) are very weak and unless someone is right next to the explosion they will survive. It's nice because it more or less eliminates noob tubing, but these limitations also give an advantage to snipers in some levels (particularly Diwagal Camp). It would be nice if they enabled the slide to help dodge snipers. There are also kill streak rewards, although they're not as elaborate, or fun, as those in COD:MW.Overall I think it's a fun game and I don't regret buying it. I give it a solid 4 stars. Here are some of the things that can be improved upon and make it 5-star worthy: a longer single player campaign, ability to slide in multiplayer, more involved kill streak rewards, rebalancing teams that are obviously uneven, and making the Diwagal Camp less sniper-friendly (how about a tunnel to cross valley?). DoZeR
My review applies primarily to multi-player, but I will say a quick word about the campaign. The campaign, while buggy, was indeed fun to play, the game play was interesting and felt authentic all the way through. It feels genuine to be fighting an actual sworn enemy of America, not the Russians for once. The plot was realistic and the controls felt familiar. Audio was superb and the graphics were on par with its FPS competitors, offering some outstanding daytime landscapes of Afghanistan. My biggest criticisms for this mode would be it feels unfinished as it lacks a coherent storyline and is quite short, stopping abruptly. The AI could use improvement, as well.As for multi-player however, I'm very unimpressed.Just about everything that frustrates me about Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2 returns in this game, with little of what makes those titles great. While the controls now offer basically the same layouts as Modern Warfare 2, which does make for easy cross-over, there is still no way to edit them to your personal liking. There is nothing worse than trying to make a quick turn while in the midst of a direct firefight with multiple tangos than accidentally stabbing wildly at the air.Unlike the campaign mode, in multi-player there is no way to go prone or dive into cover. This is extremely frustrating for folks like me who like to hit the deck when under heavy fire. The destructible environment settings have been extremely scaled back, which is not a big deal to me, as many maps are mountainous anyway, however there is no "spotting" in this game which I definitely miss. There is, as far as can tell, little to no communication between players in this game on XBL. At first I found the issue was likely related to my voice settings, but once fixed, I still heard nothing but crickets. I am a big fan of tactical communication and team work. The maps seem rather unbalanced and to be designed with snipers in mind. Your team has an obvious advantage or disadvantage depending on which side of the map you start. Each map has a handful of strategic bottlenecks you need to cross, and they quickly get torn apart with sniper fire and as the kills rack up, eventually mortars and rockets. Maps appear quite similar and boundaries are poorly designed causing you to make multiple attempts at flanking your enemy only to realize there is an invisible wall where you are trying to go.The spawn killing, rubber-banding and time-travel kills which occur in both BC2 and MW2 make their appearance here as well. The superior BC2 spawn system does not return in this game and the offered classes lack both the variety of MW2 and clearly defined roles of BC2.I could go on, but you get the idea, in the end the final product feels like an early beta. It truly feels like playing a work in progress and that's not enough to succeed in this genre. It tries to do Bad Company + Modern Warfare, and in the end makes a mockery of each.Overall, the campaign mode saves this game from being a total train wreck and makes it worthy of your time... but only as a rental. Play through it once, spend an additional few hours getting some multi-player achievements and you're done.Don't waste $60 on this game. Read more ›
