5 out of 5 stars A surprising improvement over Crysis 2
Karam M. Elahi

So here's an honest review from a 30 something gamer who's played three out of the 4 Crysis games (1, 2, and 3, sans Warhead) on the Xbox 360. Going into this review, I will profess that I am not really "in love" with the series, and neither do I dislike it. The story in Crysis overall, is pretty convoluted, and Crysis 3 is more of the same. The gameplay and graphics, however, have always drawn me in. A few things that I am comparing from at least the 2nd game to this one are the following (with my 1-2 word opinion at the end of each segment):Story:More of the same. Enough to keep you entertained through the 5-7 hour campaign. Psycho being at your side most of the time is actually entertaining. He has his moments. - neutral goodGraphics:This is one of those holy-cow-how-did-they-pull-this-off games. The difference between Crysis 2 and 3 is stunning. 2 was already quite the looker, but 3 takes it out of the park entirely. I am amazed that Crytek were able to pull out these kinds of graphics from a 7 year old machine. At the very least you would think that the frame rate would suffer, but surprisingly, it stays consistent throughout (seems to be 30fps). The look and feel of any of the levels after the first completely envelop you in the environment you're playing in. The grass swaying, the subtle use of lens-flare (which you can also turn off in the options!), and the general look of the enemies. I was extremely pleased with the eye-candy, to be sure. - very positiveGameplay:Much better than 2. The controls feel "tighter" and more fluid. Guns have that certain spunk and the kills are very satisfying. The Ceph weapons are aptly alien and look and sound really good. The grenades are so-so, in that the sound effect for the explosions feel muted, and personally, I think the timer on the grenade is a little bit too long. Cook your grenades before throwing them for the best results. The bow though. The bow....it makes this game. You really do feel like a hunter in the world and the advertising for once, rings true. The added benefit of firing it and it not breaking your stealth camo is the icing on an already tasty cake. Just try using the bow and camo for a stealth run. It hits the spot. I will rip on the energy meter though; it runs out of juice very quickly if you are doing any two things at once (camo + running, armor +high jump, etc.). In single-player, you will be able to unlock and equip perks that will help you enhance your powers somewhat (quicker camo switch, faster movement when armor equipped, etc.). The wide variety of perks in the singleplayer is a welcome addition. The levels are bigger than the ones in Crysis 2, although not quite the open sandbox that the original Crysis is. But still, that's more than enough freedom given to the player to approach a situation in a variety of ways. I definitely enjoyed the single-player in Crysis 3, more than 2. By the way, people are knocking the length of the game, as I have noticed of late. The length for me was perfect (a little over 6 hours of playtime on Veteran difficulty). Crysis 2's 14 hour playtime for me was stagnant and at times became very boring. 3 was pure fun and was packed with cinematic and sandbox moments. The perfect length and density for this gamer! And if I haven't already mentioned it before: play on Veteran difficulty. Normal was far too easy a setting. Veteran is the perfect coupling of story absorption and gameplay challenge. - very positiveMultiplayer:I'll say it now: it looks and plays much better than the beta. The graphics are not quite what the singleplayer has, but its pretty close. The netcode (at least for me), was tighter than the beta for sure. The maps are nice and well thought out and the gameplay is intense across the variety of modes that MP offers. I know that MP probably won't last longer than 6- 8 months, but what's here is enjoyable and lively. Great fun, especially the Hunter mode, which I would say is one of the best ones up there along with standard DM/TDM. - positiveSoundtrack: Comparable, if not better than the OST on Crysis 2. This one is more future-techno, but you will find yourself enraptured by some memorable music here and there. - positiveIssues:1.Sound quality drops in and out, on occasion, especially in the first open area that you get to where the huge towers are (chapter 2). After that it improves through to the end of the game.2.Energy meter depletes way too fast when doing more than one Nanosuit action, but you can circumvent this problem by buying perks in the singleplayer that can help.I wish:I really hoped that the game would have some sort of coop/horde mode. Anything to extend the amazing sandbox experience and enjoy the game with a friend, whether local or online. I won't knock it against the game, but hopefully Crytek will take a suggestion from this humble review and think about something like this for the next installment. :DAll in all: I had/am having a lot of fun playing through both single-player and multiplayer. I'll be on this game for at least the first half of this year. Highly Recommended.25FEB2013 Update: Adding in the 3D review of the game and an update for the multiplayer score:3D Review: Okay so I tried the 3D function. It natively splits the screen into two stereoscopic views, so I had to adjust my TV's 3D function to compensate for that view. In essence, the game looked very nice. The enemies are not really 3D, instead, they look like they would in the standard view. NPCs however, do look slightly 3-D. The effect itself seems to apply to your HUD, your weapon (which looks amazing in 3D, btw), and your immediate surroundings. Grass and other plants especially look very well done, as they also move out of your way while you walk through them. Crytek seems to have payed special attention to the flora, as far as 3D effects go.All in all, I was very impressed with the HUD, the 3D weapon effect, and the immersion you get from walking through grass and such. Overall, it's on par with Killzone 3's 3D. I'd give the 3D a rating of positive (7/10).Multiplayer score update: So, after having put in about 20 hours into multiplayer (and previously giving that portion of the game just a "positive" score, I am now raising it to "very positive". The multiplayer has been a blast to play through for the past week. The maps are solid and well crafted, keeping in mind the capabilities of the Nanosuit. The gameplay has been great through and through, in almost every match-made game I have played. Every game has had an "I can't believe I did that" moment. Let me list the few I remember:Power-punching down from over 25 feet and taking out 3 snipers huddled together. Sliding down a flight of stairs and getting an awesomely satisfying crotch-shot on an enemy. Sticking a guy across the map on the "Dam" map with the explosive arrow, and watching him accidentally run into a team member, taking them both out. Throwing down C4 in a high traffic area and watching a stealthed enemy walk right into my trap. Jumping up into the VTOL ship and taking out both gunners unaware, with back melees, and then taking out a third on the ground by immediately manning the turret. Clicking on Nano-vision to see and then kill, a stealthed enemy who thought I had no idea where he was. Kicking a car onto an enemy who was mortaring my teammates. Etc.The list of fun sandbox moments in multiplayer just goes on and on. Almost every game you play is memorable and you find a few hours have gone by, because you just keep thinking "just ONE more game and then I'll finish".The amount of fun I am having with the multiplayer in this game easily comes close to Rainbow Vegas 2 and dare I say, Halo Reach and Halo 4.Sure there are some occasions where the connection is not good (I'd say once for me out of every 20 matches), and there are some gametypes that are constantly empty. But if you're like me and you like Hunter, DM, TDM, Max DM, Max TDM, and Cell vs Rebel modes, there are more than enough games going on.I did not expect multiplayer to be THIS fun - very positive. 5 out of 5 stars Sick of Call of duty? Play This!!!
jonesy2423

Played about 6-7 hours of multiplayer on Xbox 360 on release day. Its a very nice change of pace from the same old call of duty and halo. I play almost every shooter that comes out and this is one of my favorites over the last couple years. The graphics are amazing, the different perks and suit abilities are cool, and using the bow is so much fun. Don't get me wrong there are a couple of things i would tweak with the multiplayer but everything else makes up for it. I even started playing the campaign last night and before i knew it 2 hours had gone by. I hate playing shooter campaigns because usually its the same old shoot this guy and fire like crazy to kill everyone else but I was having so much fun sneaking up behind guys to get the silent kills the time just flew by. I mean you can go in guns blazing, sneak up behind guys, be cloaked and use your bow. It kind of reminded me of playing batman games because all the bad guys would be freaking out when someone would go down or they'd find a body. Dont let me forget to mention that in multiplayer you can pretty much go ANYWHERE on the map you want to. If you can see something to stand on you can get there its great! You never know where the enemy will be so it adds to the excitement of playing.

5 out of 5 stars Such a well done game.
Marvusman

Do yourself a favor & pick this game up. Graphics are mindblowing on a good HDTV & sound to match. Most importantly the gameplay & controls are so tight & easy. After a couple hours of playing you'll be able to control everything with ease & there is a lot your character is capable of. Single player is very fun & sucks you in & is just long enough to invite you to replay it. Never too long or slow to become boring it's the perfect length. The multiplayer is excellent feels like HALO but with much more strategy, thinking & ways to approach battle. HALO, COD are just run in & shoot & see who dies first. More for kids & teens this actually produces a tense drama & tension like Dead Space in a FPS. Really tense at times & keeps you on the edge of your seat when you can't see enemies like the Predator. Get this game!

5 out of 5 stars It feels good to be Prophet.

Just finished the game, and it was another epic ending. I want to start this review off with the negatives. First, I liked Crysis 2 and Crysis the most. I play on XBOX, and I was introduced to this series with Crysis 2. I preordered Crysis 3 through Amazon and received a free download of the original Crysis. I am about half-way through the first game but still believe Crysis 2 to be the best overall game. I just loved playing in the urban environment and loved how the HUD gave you your tactical options. I also thought the ending was the best of the two games I have completed. Second, Crysis 3 was way too short. On the veteran (hard) difficulty level, I beat it in about 8 hours, so the 6 hour time frame on the default difficulty is most likely accurate. Crysis 2 had 19 missions that will take 10-12 hours on default and 14+ on veteran. The original Crysis is also shaping up to be longer as well. I felt like from the beginning of Crysis 3, you were plunged right into the middle of the game and you knew where the game was headed. I enjoyed the suspense and creepiness of Crysis 2 and Crysis and waiting for the big reveal which was so satisfying. Now the positives. The graphics will be the first that everyone talks about. I thought Halo and Arkham City looked amazing. Nothing compares to Crysis 3-not even Crysis 2. This is as close to PC quality graphic as you are going to get. Be warned though, graphical fidelity takes a hit in multiplayer. Crytek outsourced the MP to Crytek UK (formerly Free Radical). Crytek UK is no slouch at MP and has a long history of quality MP games. So the gameplay is there, but the graphics do not compare to the campaign-Crysis 2 tops it in MP graphics. The controls and gameplay is tight and well-crafted. This is probably the most important quality in a game for me. I love Halo, and the idea of being a supersoldier is great. Halo is a well-balanced game that I love to play online with friends. However, no game makes you feel like a supersoldier like Crysis 3 does in the campaign and in multiplayer. I also love this sci-fi story. The critics have bashed it relentlessly for a lack of story and characterization, but I think the story is fine. It is epic in scope and gives you enough information or implies enough to where a reasonable person could figure it out. The only flaw may be that Crytek does not tell the story in the most effective manner. For example, we are left wondering the fate of certain characters such as Nomad, Alcatraz, Psycho, and Nathan Gould. Spoiler ahead---I have read somewhere that Nomad was killed off in a graphic novel. You learn of what happened to Alcatraz in this game. Psycho's fate is somewhat undetermined in this game, and I don't recall hearing anything about Gould in this game. I actually believe these are effective story telling techniques because they leave you wanting more or force you to use your imagination. People praised the original Star Wars but until The Empire Strikes Back came out, the fate of Darth Vader was up in the air- I don't recall anyone complaining about that.Overall, I think this was a great game. I would have given it 4.5 stars if I could, but I refused to give it "just" a 4. It was better than that. I think the conclusion was satisfying, and am happy with what becomes of Prophet. Unless Crytek can expand on the Crysis universe in an original, meaningful way, I hope this is the definitive end of this trilogy. It is worth it. Read more ›

2 out of 5 stars Love the Silent Hill games..But...
pinkbunny

I am a huge fan of the Silent hill games..So when the HD collection came out I couldn't wait to get it since I never had the 3rd Silent hill game for my collection..Sadly When I got the game and started to play it there where so many problems with the sound and how glitchy the game play is I stopped playing it.Konami said that they would be releasing patches to fix these problems,So I have been waiting for the patch to be released to be able to play the game without all the issues.Konami released the patch for the PS3 about a month ago and we where told that the 360 patch would be out in a few more weeks, well now Konami has said there will be no patch for the Xbox 360..I had emailed Konami and this is the response I got."Dear Konami Customer,Thank you for contacting Konami Customer Support about this issue. We understand your frustrations at having waited so long for an announcement regarding the patch for the XBOX 360 version of Silent Hill HD Collection. Unfortunately we are unable to patch the game. We apologize for the inconvenience. But unfortunately due to technical constraints we simply will be unable to patch the XBOX 360 version."So basically I paid $50.00 for a glitchy game where the sound doesn't even work all the time..Yes I love the Silent hill games but this was a waste of money.Don't buy the Xbox 360 version,if at all possible buy the PS3 version or avoid buying at all...

1 out of 5 stars Inferior and broken game
Mochi Pochi

Do Not buy this game. Konami has announced that they will not release a patch to the xbox 360 version. They acknowledge that this game is broken but they refuse to release a patch due to technical issues and resources. if you want the best Silent Hill experience i'd recommend the original xbox versions of Silent Hill 2 and the playstation 2 version of 3. they look pretty much the same if not better and they won't screw up as much as this broken POS.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this.
A. Roland

This game was buggy when it was first released to the point where the PS2 versions are greatly superior. The PS3 version was patched to a point where it's allegedly up to snuff (not sure, I've never played it) but the 360 version is unpatched and Konami has said that they have no intentions of fixing it. Konami knows it's broken, has no intention of fixing it, and wants you to pay 40 dollars for it. I was really looking forward to this collection, I'm so disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars These 4 or 5 star reviews are misleading...
Bill Murray

Look, I've checked out several of the reviews for this product and I find it odd that so many of the higher reviews are so articulate and well written when this "game" is clearly a miserable excuse of an HD Collection. This leads me to believe that A) these people were PAID by Konami (the publisher) to help bolster what is assuredly almost universally bad reviews for a broken piece of software, or B) these are some truly hardcore Silent Hill fans that desperately want to believe that this pile of broken promises is actually a pleasant update to some of the best horror games ever made.I love Silent Hill since the first one appeared on the PlayStation years ago, and continued to love the series up until about Silent Hill 4: The Room. This HD collection is, quite simply, a soulless cash grab on the part of Konami. This "HD" collection somehow manages to be INFERIOR to the original standard definition versions of the game that came out several years ago.The games have always relied on the heavy use of fog for both atmospheric effect and to also mask some of the blemishes that last gen games sometimes had, like poor textures or unfinished environment geometry. Not in this version! For some reason, when they ported these two classics to this HD version they somehow forgot that the fog is a big part of the game and it ended up not being present. As such, you see every wrinkle, ungainly hair, and outright unfinished sections of the game because you were NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE THAT STUFF. Not only that, but, for some reason, they decided to rerecord the audio and dialogue without giving players the option to have the original dialogue and audio be selectable. This significantly alters the experience, but not in a good way since some of the mouth movements of characters no longer sync up properly nor do the actors sound as good as the originals. The game was/is so bad that Konami actually gave Xbox 360 users FREE games to make up for it; they knew they were shipping an unfinished product and didn't care. They knew they shipped a game that used incomplete code; one that was so slapdash and poor that a big videogame company actually gave consumers who purchased their shoddy title free stuff to shut them up. That's how bad these versions of these games are.If we can take off our rosy tinted glasses for five seconds and take a cold, hard look at this thing, what we can see is a game that is a shameless cash in that is clearly inferior to the originals and a game that SHOULD of been a home-run for older fans, and a great jumping on point for new ones. What you get is probably the biggest insult to Silent Hill fans and a game series that is one of the best survival horror games (and possibly some of the best games) ever made. After a string of pretty poor follow ups to this series, Konami has done the unthinkable and ruined one of it's best franchises while simultaneously spitting in the faces of longtime fans with what is clearly an inferior, rushed, and outright busted piece of software. In short, save your money. And please, don't support incomplete, broken games that are unfettered garbage, especially if it destroys what made the original classics so good in the first place. Read more ›

4 out of 5 stars Despite some issues, still very enjoyable
David J. Goodrum

This game was a very enjoyable experience for the most part. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because like others, I experienced a few glitches, but unlike others, never enough to significantly affect the gameplay - usually just the sound getting distorted in the presence of multiple monsters. I have an Xbox 360 Slim I just got 3 months ago and my theory is that the glitches are worst for those with older models / consoles. The fact that they did not include an original voices option for Silent Hill 3 also keeps this from getting 5 stars. Without even having played the original games I can see that the "feel" of the games were changed by this and perhaps a few other factors. That said, even though I wish the makers of the game had done a much better job with these HD versions, I have still gotten an immense amount of enjoyment out them. I would recommend them only to those with newer consoles and who don't think they will mind some of the changes from the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Great fitness program
Heisenberg

Just FYI Best Buy is currently giving away UFC Undisputed 2010 free when you buy UFC Personal Trainer. I took advantage of that deal.I wouldn't call UFC Personal Trainer a game. It's a fitness system. This is not a gimmick to get MMA fans to open their wallets. The program was developed and certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine based on MMA training techniques. I started the 30 day strength training program and had an excellent workout. I'm a sergeant in the USMC and I've had numerous physical training sessions. The exercises I performed in UFC Trainer were very familiar as they are the same basic exercises Marines use to stay in shape. Pushups, squats, and lunges are proven and tested exercises. If you are already fit I would suggest picking up some light weight dumbbells for the standing upper body workouts such as upright rows and the Arnold press. The program features various modes to help you get in shape. "Workout mode" has several pre-made routines for you to choose from. Each routine has a short description including what areas it will improve and estimated number of calories burned. You can also make your own workout routine. There is also a "quick workout" mode which I have not tried but the instruction manual implies you pick a target goal and quick workout automatically starts up a workout to improve that area. "Programs" are really where I think this game shines. Here you pick a workout program with a specific goal such as strength, cutting weight, and cardio. The program is for a specific duration as well such as 30 or 60 days. The "Activities" are simply fun UFC inspired mini-games for you to play. The speed bag is about timing and rhythm, the tire flip is basically a squat where you explode upwards from the squat position, you can hit the mitts and freestyle on the heavy bag as well. There are systems in place to help track your progress as well. You input your age, height, and weight and your BMR can be calculated. There are graphs to track your progress by calories burned, weight lost, muscle's exercised, etc. You can even take pictures of yourself to keep track of your body's fitness transformation. Consistently doing the workout programs unlocks rewards and achievements such as doing 100 upper body workouts. If you are under the impression that this game will make you into a fighter, you will be disappointed. If you want to be a fighter you need to find a martial arts gym with a focus on both ground work and stand-up. What this game will do for you, is provide you with a fun and motivating way to transform your body. If you do these exercises and have a consistent routine I'm fully confident you will get in better shape.Note: I didn't have any problem with the game freezing but some of the other reviews have indicated that the problem was already fixed. For some of those still having issues:I've noticed a few things in the past week since I bought the game. First it is extremely important that your entire body appears green within the octagon in the corner. If you get in plan position to do push-ups and your face is yellow or red, you are too close to the sensor. Floor exercises seem to be giving people the most trouble. I suggest you make sure your kinect is calibrated properly and give yourself enough room.Secondly, timing is important when doing the exercises. You have to wait for the green arrow to at least begin to appear before changing position. There is also an audible bleep sound that helps you with the timing. For example When doing push-ups go down, hear the bleep, and then go up. You will then hear another bleep you can go back down. If you do them too fast or out of rhythm the exercise will not register. It actually helps you develop proper form and rhythm. Exercises like push-ups should be done in a steady controlled manner to get the most out of them. Read more ›

Updated 7/5/11 I have been training 20 years and I have to say this 30 day endurance on advanced is definitely a great test. To get a little extra burn a few 5 minute sessions of heavybag and mitt work. I got about 10 pauses today in my workout hopefully they fix this it auto pauses even if you are entirely green and standing still. If anyone was worried about back problems and doing ground routines this is very forgiving with technique found this out when I was getting tired. I wish they made the pushups register like you do jumprope it would be much better for fast pushups. Nothing worse than non registering reps while you are really tired.Updated 7/1/11 Calorie burning estimator needs some tuning. 600+ strikes 60,000+ points on heavybag in 5 minutes gave 13-53 calories burned. But 3 minutes of very light much slower paced mitt work of maybe 40 strikes gave 99-300+ calories burned.Updated 6/30/11 Uploaded short video. 5 stars for both fun and overall.Updated!6/29/11 Just tried an hour of heavybag, speedbag, tire flips and mitt work. I think it's all FIXED!!! Now this is how it was intended to be! I'm ONLINE and no freezes the last hour. Do pushups according to the pace of the machine I know some of you out there are pushup and situp machines you are limited by the kinect device itself from keeping up with you. That being said I think this is now better than fitness evolved and the best entertaining workout kinect title to date. It's a MUST for any UFC fan. Hope this review helps I'm totally enjoying this Title now! Not a fan of a ring girl giving demands on the heavybag, speedbag or tire flips if I wanna hear a woman complaining I'll go deal with the old lady ;).Don't know if Amazon is slowing down but this deserves a 4 to 5 star now that this bug is fixed also it's showing I only put 1 star for fun this is 5 stars on both. Amazon needs to fix that.I'll continue to update this according to fixes.Updated! 6/28/11Game locks up to frequently to get a good steady cardio going. It does not track many exercises accurately pushups or situps etc.. I found it tracked jumping jacks the best also noticed while hitting the heavybag if you perform a Thai clinch it tracks your hands as well while you throw knees so it looks like a triple hit... I feel the activation of particular strikes need serious tuning.I performed 29-30 pushups it counted 13 not before locking up the whole xbox. These lockups last 10 or more seconds at times. It doesn't just lock the game up it also may do a never ending loop of whatever sound was on. Do it at the machines pace otherwise it won't count even if you can bang out 100 pushups in 1 minute it's too fast for the kinect not UFC trainers fault.ProsUFC franchiseCreate your own workout routine also "weighted routines"assorted equipment "Mitt work, Tire flips, heavybag, and speed bagUnlockable equipmentOverall progress trackingBest workout title on Kinect a must for UFC fansGreat addition to regimen.ConsWish Pushups registry were like Jump ropes for fast pushupsIntermittent pauses becoming more regular got 5 pauses while my body was green during mitt work. Kills the pace.None , girl giving me demands "You're going too fast" You're going too slow" ;) on the speedbag lol. Not so much a con. Read more ›

2 out of 5 stars An Exercise in Frustration
J. Estrada

I'm a big fan of the UFC and a big fan of working out, so this title seemed like a natural fit for me. I've successfully completed P90X and GSP's excellent RushFit, so I have reference as to what a good workout routine is and I entered UFC Trainer with certain expectations, neither of which is fully met with this title, which certainly feels like a rough draft of a game that could've used 3 months of additional development time. At first, the sheer variety of workout options seems rather nice and varied. The variety is quickly wasted upon hearing your trainer repeat phrase after phrase, such as, "let's get the body ready for a great workout," followed 3 seconds later by "let's get the body ready for a great workout." Much more variety in the dialogue is a no brainer. How the developers let this slide is surprisingly Bush League game development since it really bites into the experience. More variety in warm-up exercises would have been welcome, such as having the CPU randomly select 5 warm up moves from a pool of warm-up exercises instead of having to do the same ones before every routine. The option to skip warm-up or cooldown would have been nice.During a routine you are prompted to input how heavy a weight you would like to use for the upcoming exercise... but are never told what that exercise is. So how do I know how much weight to grab (since the weight has to be input, to help figure calorie burn) - I'll use different weight for triceps than lunges, for example. Again, the user experience seems to be an afterthoughtThe biggest sin this title commits is in its shoddy body movement recognition during 'gameplay.' I can't remember how many clean, strict, push ups I would hammer out only to see the game wasn't registering but a fraction of them. Jumping jacks also gave the game a hard time to see and register, so the frustration quickly builds as you are losing your point bonuses and sometimes even fail an exercise outright since the goal numbers aren't being met. This problem rears its ugly head again in sparring, where sharp and crisp jabs and crosses frequently are met with a buzzer announcing you failed to throw the strike properly.Graphics are decent, nothing remarkable, background music is derivative hard guitars trying to emulate the UFC feel. Sound effects are ridiculous, similar to 80's kung-fu movies, like when a trainer throws a knee strike you hear a whoosh! Every step the trainer takes on the mat sounds way more dramatic than it should be.Overall, I got some decent workouts in, but the game's faults were so glaring that I became jaded with it after 2 weeks. Even Xbox Achievement hounds should steer clear of this sweaty turd. In closing, this title suffers greatly from its lack of polish. Perhaps next year's edition will clear up the blemishes this is covered in. For a mere $20 more, I recommend George St. Pierre's RushFit dvd set. Very varied, very demanding, very fun - and produces great results. Read more ›

In this over-the-top snowboarding extravaganza players jump into the boots of your favorite SSX character -- including those featured in previous releases in the franchise -- and race, trick, and survive the world's most iconic mountain ranges. Based on real-world NASA topographical data, each mountain range delivers an experience true to the franchise's rich history, allowing you to defy reality and own the planet. Gameplay Along with racing and trick performance gameplay in which you pull off runs and sick jumps to build point multipliers and earn in-game currency, SSX includes the ability to explore the gameworld with minimal barriers as to where you can go. Additionally the game contains multiplayer options including the ability to compete in live events against real people in real-time on every drop in the game or to race against the posted times of friends in which ghosts of your friends' runs are visible in your world showing you exactly how they performed. Explore - Explore every drop in the massive world of SSX. Post a time and move up or down the leaderboard even if you quit out and turn off your console. RiderNet - Inspired by the incredible Autolog engine that powered NFSHP, RiderNet will guide you through the incredible world of SSX by allowing you to 'like' your favorite drops, recommending new drops and friends, guiding you to where your friends are, or drops that their ghosts are dominating, and directing you to the biggest and best global events for your level. 3 out of 5 stars Close but lacking the flare SSX Tricky and SSX 3 possessed
S. Schmidt

This is a fun game as far as a pure snowboarding, single-player experience is concerned, but unfortunately there are a number of things that are lacking in this title that leave the game falling short of my expectations. If you have an affinity for the previous SSX releases you may be disapppointed as a lot of what made the previous releases great is absent here. Also, if you are looking for a solid multiplayer experience you may want to look elsewhere.EA has taken a more serious approach to this game. Originally the game was going to be called SSX Deadly Decents, and after negative consumer feedback with regards to the new serious direction taken in the revamped IP they decided to remove Deadly Decents from the title and just call it SSX. However, it doesn't appear that they made any attempt to alter the original game they programmed based on this consumer feedback. It is a shame because I feel like EA completely ignored the feedback from their fan base and said we are giving you the game we made whether you like it or not. So the game ends up feeling less like an SSX game and more like a survival snowboarding game. That aside, if you are new to the franchise you may not have the nostalgia associated with previous iterations of the game and find the snowboarding gameplay fun in its own right. They have tried to add a little bit of a story to the game through some comic book pages in between mountains, but it is superficial at best. The basic premise of the game is that you are traveling around the globe to recruit members to your SSX team. Each member is specialized to handle one of the unique challenges each of the 9 mountain ranges presents. Each mountain range starts with you competing in a few race and tricky events and finishes with you taking on a deadly descent. You can think of each mountain range having one peak that is a boss battle - the deadly descent survival final stage. So for one mountain range the deadly descent may be darkness, another avalanches, etc., with specialized gear being required to handle each unique challenge presented. These mountain boss battles or survival runs include whiteouts (use special goggles for terrain mapping), darkness (headlamp), drop offs (requires a wingsuit to glide over crevices), ice (ice picks to improve turning ability), extreme cold (solar panel for heat), thin air (oxygen tank), rocks (armor), avalanches, and trees. Some of the game highlights and drawbacks are outlined below:PROS:-The controls are tight making it easy to carve up the mountain and perform stunts.-Athough pretty limited, the soundtrack is decent. I do wish there was a little more variety provided in the music included.-The landscapes are large and beautiful with some pretty long runs down the mountain.-There are a number of game modes (racing, trick events, survival events) and a larger number of locations/trails to decend than I expected.-The ability to purchase a number of upgrades to each snowboarder is a plus.-Several welcome nuances have been added to the gameplay on the various mountains that require specialized gear to survive descents like headlamps, wing suits, armor, ice picks, and solar panels. These subtle changes to gameplay help keep the game interesting.-A GEOTAG system has been added that basically allows you and other players to hide markers on the various slopes. The player who dropped the GEOTAG collects money at a certain rate until the marker is discovered and other players that find the marker get money for locating the marker. It can be fun trying to find the perfect spot to hide a marker and trying to figure out how to reach those hard to reach GEOTAGS you see glimmering in the distance.-I do think the survival aspects added to the game are a welcome addition, but I wish more emphasis was placed on the SSX brand and less on the deadly descent aspects.CONS:-The over the top personalities of the characters developed in earlier iterations of this game are non-existent so you really don't develop an attachment to any of the characters. Also, even though you can change the color of of your character's snowsuit, there doesn't appear to be any unique alternative character models like in previous SSX games. The base character models have changed for some of the characters making them not really feel like the same character you use to know.-The lack of real live head to head competition really hurts the game. Beating the ghost of a friend just isn't the same as racing or tricking right next to them. Although the GEOTAG system is a fun little add-on, multiplayer feels very underdeveloped and tacked on.-Although there are unique aspects to the mountains in terms of terrain (ice versus rock versus forrest), the differences are subtle. There was a real distinction in various locations in the previous SSX games that is lacking here.In the past few days a problem has risen in my ability to connect to Ridernet ( the online aspect of the game). This is an issue other gamers are also having. While it isn't affecting every user, it is affecting both 360 and PS3 versions of the game. I have contacted EA about the problem, but they have yet to get back to me. Given this latest turn of events I cannot recommend that anyone buy this game until the issue is resolved. Also, given the lackluster multiplayer I would also wait until the price drops before picking this title up. I was enjoying the game for what it was worth up to the point where my technical issue developed but I admit that I am left partially disappointed by the neutering of the personality associated with SSX tricky. 1 out of 5 stars MAJOR Disappointment!
Astral

What a let down. A return to form? I think not... SSX 3 and SSX Tricky were two great snowboarding games for many reasons. The customization allowed you to give your character a little style. The music was fun and upbeat. The courses were optimized for gameplay and were lit up like an amusement park. There were all sorts of shortcuts to find and little surprises along the way that kept the game interesting. No two runs were the same. The game had a "flow" to it that felt great once you got into a cool trick string. Grab some friends, because there was co-op, and not just online play either... SSX has none of these things. NONE of them.Gone is the co-op. If you want to "compete" against friends, they need their own copy of the game, game console, and internet connection. There's no racing each other, just the illusion of co-op, and definitely none of the shared couch kind which is what makes these competitive games so much fun. Customization? You can buy different boards, which are not all that different really. Forget about cutesy backpacks and other cool accessories. The suits are all the same patterns too, although you can buy color swap versions, and some that have a slight glow effect.... big deal. The courses are patterned after various scans of real mountains around the world. This adds realism but takes away the fun. There's plenty of places where you can literally just fall to your dooming death, and sometimes are forced into it if you don't have prior knowledge of a run. There is a rewind option but it's useless as it only rewinds you (everyone else keeps going forward, making you hopelessly behind in a race) or else detracts from your score (which is harmful when you are tricking). Courses designed to be FUN (such as SSX Tricky or SSX 3) would have been welcome... they could have done a few of those and given both the ho-hum drab realism and the flashy joyful runs, but they didn't. The neon lights and extravagance of past games helped brighten up the monotony of snow, trees and rocks, which is all SSX has in abundance. The game also never settles into that comfortable flow. The courses are too broken up and uneven to get that feeling, with jumps coming too close together or too far apart. Not to mention the giant chasms you can trick yourself right down into. There are a few secret little hideaways but nothing as we have seen in the past. The trick runs also seem to be way harder in comparision to races on the same mountain, making the difficulty curve spike and plummet insanely.SSX is a decently built title... you can tell a lot of time went into it, and some thought was put in to figure out how to update this to modern consoles. However, the formula didn't really need updating, and that's the biggest mistake they made. Trading realism for fun, has made this a boring, monotonous disappointment. Which should not have been a surprise considering the past two installments - SSX On Tour and SSX Blur - neither which managed to get the franchise "feel" right. They were misteps, and this is yet another one. Definitely try before you buy. Read more ›

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment . . . Its EA Sports I should have know better
Douglas A. Roemelt

I'm not going to give this the full blown soup to nuts review, but lets start with some shopping advice1. Rent don't own2. Its colorful and a few of the runs are quite fun (e.g. wing suit), but much of it is played 'in the dark' with no clue regarding the 'line'. Do you ski in the dark often? No. Why. Because its deadly. Maybe when I complete them all, I can play the different runs with a wing suit or a flash light and my review will improve3. Does anyone at EA Sports actually talk to gamers ABOUT WHAT THEY'VE LIKED IN THE PAST, WANT TO SEE4. Seriously, they could just remake 'Tricky' for the 360 and I'd buy it, probably like it more5. I like the concept, six peaks, deadly challenges, and I like the mix of tricks and races, but the game has to many easy ways to die that the rider is simply 'forced' into6. What made tricky great was (1) the ability to knock opposing riders down, (2) the ability to race someone else in the same room, (3) the happy music when you kicked into tricky mode, and (4) the interesting and often unexpected short-cuts, tunnels, suprizes. This game has a few of these items but its not all that special.Rent it for a weekend

4 out of 5 stars SSX..... The return!
Terrence A.

(NOTE: I'm actually giving this game 4.5 out of 5 stars, not just 4)PLUS:-RiderNet is a godsend, even if it has already been done before-Great soundtrack as usual-Spectacular tricks and combo based gameplay-Control schemes are well implemented, even offering a "classic" control schemeMINUS:-The spirit of the characters seems to have been lost from previous installments-Campaign mode isn't really engaging-Some mountains are a little TOO treacherous resulting in what feels like repeated cheap deathsIf you generally get a kick out of targeting your buddies best scores in any leaderboard based games or you lose sleep when someone has knocked you off of your high score perch and taking them down becomes the order of the day, then you will absolutely adore SSX.The RiderNet setup is the absolute draw here, make no bones about it. I cannot praise this new feature enough. I've never played "Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit" but it's my understanding that the Autolog setup in that game works just like the RiderNet system does in SSX, by providing you with real time updates on who's doing what in the SSX world. In short, RiderNet makes this game feel alive. I guarantee that SSX will help create plenty of intense rivalries for those who immerse themselves deep enough in the game, thanks to RiderNet's absolutely awesome interface. I'm aware that I'm gushing maybe a little too rabidly about it but believe me, the recently released demo barely skims the surface of what RiderNet entails. There are a lot of races and trick runs to get to the top of here and RiderNet does a phenomenal job of keeping you up to speed in regards to not only how you're holding up but also how your friends are faring on those very same courses. I found it very easy to plot what it was that I wanted to involve myself in and which course records to shoot for next. Ghosts are automatically uploaded and downloaded and while there's no real time multiplayer involved, you're still getting the best of the experience by racing directly against the ghosts of other players doing their best runs. I'm loving what I'm seeing here in terms of early community interaction and judging from the scores and times already posted, it looks like I've got my work cut out for me on my way to the top of the boards. I really want to see more involved leaderboard systems like this in other games and genres, it's absolutely great and the best thing about the game, hands down.I love the soundtrack and while it's a bit different from what I was expecting, there are a lot of great songs here that I'm sure anyone will enjoy. I found myself using Shazam a couple of times when I missed the artist and track title info, so that should count for something regarding the quality of the song selection. You can listen to your own music as well and the best part about that is that the game messes with the audio of the tracks just like it does with the in-game music, providing a seamless listening experience similar to what the game already gives you.Using the right analog stick to perform tricks takes some getting used to and I'm not going to lie when I say that it's a lot to take in. The trick lies in getting used to the rhythm of the game. The game practically uses several different control schemes depending on whether you're on the ice or in the air and when you're careening down a mountain side and you're in the thick of a crazed trick busting, combo racking run, don't be surprised if you can't mentally process what your hands are doing of their own accord. I'm not knocking this because ever since the first game, this has been par for the course. It's all part of what makes SSX what it is. Like I mentioned above, you can play with a "classic" control scheme but I like the revamped style enough to stick with it.On the negative side, I really didn't care for the campaign or story mode, if you even want to call it that. It's an admittedly thin plot that uses varying styles to push the story forward. I loved how the characters were bigger than life in the previous games but here, they've basically been whittled down to selectable characters. Most of them are still here but I miss the outrageousness and trash talk from SSX 3 and SSX Tricky. They've lost their mojo but they still bust out some of the most insane snowboarding tricks you'll ever see, so it's not so painful of a loss. Another slight issue I had with the game was that on several of these mountains, I was dying simply way too much. This was never really an issue in the other games but here, it happens a little more frequently than I would've liked and it kind of stops the momentum of the game every time you go flying off of a mountain and have to start all over. I found the Deadly Descent runs great on some sides and uninteresting on others.I think the wingsuit feature leaves a bit to be desired also but hey, you can't fault the developers for trying something new. Thankfully, you don't use it all that much. Same goes for the rewind feature, which is really only useful for placing `geotags' throughout the world. The geotags themselves are a great and really cool idea (think of them as easter eggs that you leave behind for anyone else to pick up and the longer it takes for anyone to find them, the more in-game currency you receive; it's another great form of trash talking that the game provides) but since the clock keeps running while you're rewinding, there's really no use for it if you're on a serious run.Is this the game SSX fans have been waiting for, for so long? Well, I suspect a lot of fans are going to have gripes with a lot of what I've mentioned and more but you can color this fan impressed. It's not perfect and could use a little more tinkering but this will definitely be my go-to game for when I'm not in the mood to sink a whole day into Skyrim or something else equally as time consuming. Truth be told, the hours melted away on me yesterday when I was posting up as many trick runs as I could before I went to sleep.
